Is Obama risking becoming the national version of Gray Davis?
The former Democratic governor of California was elected as a pro-labor liberal.
But, once in office, he turned further right, backing business-sponsored revisions to California’s labor laws, and opposing a raise in the minimum wage, among other disastrous moves. Davis’ supporters deserted him in droves, and his tax increases did not cause conservatives to switch to supporting him.
If you alienate your friends and fail to win over your enemies, you are left with no one.
Davis lost his job through a recall vote, and was replaced not by a conservative, as the sponsors of the recall petition wanted, but by center-right Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Obama’s health care bill is a giveaway to the insurance companies, not the hoped-for health care reform. Unions who supported him are now mad because of the proposed tax on their members’ health plans. He has funneled billion$ to Wall Street. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan appear as never-ending as they were under Bush. Abortion rights are in danger due to the reduction of medical practices that offer them, and the procedure is barred from the new health plot. There have been no initiatives on anti-racist measures. No significant action has taken place on “don’t question, don’t tell.” There is still a recession, and jobs are still going down the tubes
Since he is alienating his supporters, but the conservatives (obviously) still despise him, and they have not regained any of their massive credibility losses from Bush and then Palin, could Obama lose his reelection campaign to a “moderate” Republican? Or even be the first president since Lyndon Johnson to be pushed out of his party’s nomination by candidates that at least postured to be further to the left?
I don’t care who you personally support. I’m interested in horse-race type analysis and opinions, so no partisan crap, please.
