Am I just being mean and hormonal?
So my best friend just found out she’s pregnant, and I’m not very pleased for her. I feel terrible that I’m not excited, but I just feel sorry for the baby and sorry for her.
Here’s the deal: She’s 29 and in a HORRIBLE relationship. She was married to this guy for 3 years, he up and divorced her, came back, left again, came back a third time-and she gave up her apartment to go back in with him. He’s not abusive, but he’s very controlling and was very spoiled growing up. He’s 39 years ancient and still attached to his mama’s hip. His mom sent him a care package when he left his wife!
And he pretty much forced himself on her sexually one night. He didn’t take time to warm her up, and he made her weep during and afterwards-and left to sleep on the couch. She came up with this wacky plot to leave him (that’s a whole other tale, and she has tried so many times to leave him before but always goes back) Then she found out she’s pregnant.
He’s pleased, and now she tells me “Maybe fatherhood will change him.”
To top it off, she’s not the healthiest she could be. I like her to death, and don’t want to be mean but she’s quite a bit overweight, turns 30 in a few weeks, and has been living in a slum apartment under high-high stress with no prenatal care, plus a rough night of sex, and a poor diet. She found out she’s pregnant at about 2 months along. She goes to the doctor soon and is applying for Medicaid. She doesn’t have a job, or health insurance.
She’s very excited about this baby because she’s only gotten pregnant once in her late teens and lost the baby. She thought she’d never be a mom. But I just feel like it’s a crazy situation, and a baby is not a reason to stay with this man.
I’d never want an abortion, and I’d never place her down. I just worry for her. I’ve read that being overweight poses significant risks to mother and baby, and all of the stress she’s been under and poor environment! I hope it works out for the best, for all involved. And I want to be a excellent friend..so does it make me a horrible person that I’m not all excited?
